medicine

Im in a rotation right now where I shadow doctors in a hospital.  I wake up, take my caffeine and diet pills and sit in a corner of a room where these doctors discuss the cases of the patients on there service and I mentally masturbate.  I do not contribute to the process, I just sit there thinking about how Im going to eat lunch twice and watch a lot of cable TV.  Sometimes I jot down notes of procedures/tests/terms that are foreign to me in a vain attempt to look interested and busy.

Im out of there everyday at about noon and I engage myself in a deep ritual of eating as many carbohydrates as possible before I get back on the 4 train.  I call it the reverse atkins.   Its working pretty well with cigarettes and coffee.

Sometimes I wonder why I play the roll of Gweneth Paltrow in 'The Royal Tennenbaums.'  Im a closet smoker.  Instead of estee lauder perfume I use some cheap shit spray called Raw Power that I purchased at target.  It does a great job at masking the smell of parliaments, as well as make me out to be an overzealous teen who has gone a little carzy on the cologne.

I went to target last week and bought a whole bunch of junk that ties my apartment together.  I don't really need any of it, but maybe Im just a socialist trapped in a wanna be yuppie capitalist's body who's bored.  i got to the cash register at Tarje (I cant figure out how to insert an accent on the e there) and my credit card didnt work.  Turns out the credit card company reduced my credit that week due to an overdue balance of student loans that I failed to defer being that Im in a residency program, I was just too dim witted or lazy to take care of that on time.  So I used my debit card to pay for it.  Im now negative 300 bucks on my ledger.

The moral of the story is that this rotation is melting my mind in a sense.  Im doing a lot of bright things and reaping the rewards.

Oral Surgery Residency

So you want to be an Oral Surgeon??  Its funny you apply to dental school thinking that youre going to have the better quality of life as a dentist, and then you sign up for more torture geared towards call and misery.  whats it like on the other side? not sure.  I'm an intern in an omfs program.  Things are going well.   But you go into it gung ho and excited only to be greeted with pimping this and crazy patient that.

I don't want to whine, that's not what this page is about.  If I can shed some light on OMFS and what happens within this wonderful service, hey Ive accomplished what I set out to do.

Have you ever been in a fraternity?  Without the drinking of course... well for some.  My theory is that its a vicious cycle of malicious intent set upon a backdrop of inexperience.  What do I mean by that you ask?  Well basically some of the chiefs and seniors were abused, so they abuse the interns.  No big deal right? And where did the abuse begin anyhow?  It stems from the fact that OMFS has a hard on for proving their self worth due to the fact that they're on the top of the food chain in the world of dentistry however treated like second class citizens in the world of surgeons and MD's.

Oral Surgery

What is Oral Surgery? What is it that an Oral Surgeon does?  Many people don't have definitions or clear answers for these questions, but this blog is here to simplify things for the lay man and be an educational tool for someone who has been referred to an oral surgeon.

I would also like to open things up for the experts, or professionals who would like to participate in this community with posts, pictures, articles or any input to enrich the site and educate the lay man as well as make this site a resource of information for the educated.

The first topic I will discuss is denal extractions.   If you ever need a tooth extracted from your mouth, you can have your dentist take care of that for you, or you can see the specialist for that.. the oral surgeon.   This is basic bread and butter type stuff for the oral surgeon.  Most exrtactions that are difficult get sent to the oral surgeon, especially wisdom teeth.  Wisdom teeth are your 3rd molars way back in your mouth, and sometimes hidden (impacted) under your gums.  Thus the need to take out these teeth surgically is there for several reasons which we will get into on a later date.
